The
Nordic Filtration Society is a Chapter of the Filtration Society and it was founded in Gothenburg on
August 1,
The basic objective for the Nordic
Chapter is to arrange Nordic Filtration Symposia and thus to offer a forum
where to discuss "Nordic" solid/fluid separation problems, to
establish a Nordic filtration information network and to stimulate contacts
between Nordic industries, research institutes and universities.
Like
the Filtration Society itself (formed in
Industrial gas cleaning
Water purification
Vacuum and pressure filtration
Filter media
Membrane filtration
Settlers
Cyclones
Centrifuges
Scrubbers
The Filtration Society arranges
seminars, symposia, and conferences and informs on all kinds of continuing
development work. If you want to join the Filtration Society and the Nordic
Filtration Society, you will have a cost effective way of keeping up to date
with the developments in separation technology. As a further benefit you will
receive the outstanding journal “Filtration” incorporating the transactions with
refereed scientific papers. Application forms and other details can be found on
the homepage of the Filtration Society Please mark that you would like to belong to
the Nordic Chapter of the Filtration Society, NoFS.

A short comment on
the 13th Nordic Filtration
Symposium June 10-11, 2010 in Lappeenranta
The 13th
Nordic Filtration Symposium was hosted during 10–11 June by CST in cooperation
with The Nordic Filtration Society. The
event was attended by more than 80 professionals from the field of filtration,
ranging from experienced professors to doctoral students to experts from the
industry. During two days current topics
in membrane filtration and solid–liquid separation were discussed by delegates
from 12 countries.
The themes of
the symposium were material, water and energy efficiency, as well as filtration
in extreme process conditions. The
topics were discussed in 20 oral presentations and a poster exhibition. The invited speakers, Professor Wojciech Kujawski and
Professor Richard Wakeman,
gave talks on extremely topical issues with Kujawski
discussing biofuels and the challenges they pose on
membrane separation while Wakeman gave an insight into the future of
filtration.
In the
membrane filtration sessions, several talks focused on separation material
durability in extreme conditions. Jorgen
Wagner from Denmark discussed the excellent properties of silicon carbide
in highly alkaline conditions and in organic solvents. Jussi Lahti from
LUT presented a comparison of polyamide membranes exposed to acetic acid
solutions.
Kristofer Dingwell (Chalmers University of Technology) introduced an
important topic in his presentation on the production of biofuels - Ethanol is
regarded as one of the most important biofuels due to its carbon neutral
nature. In Sweden there is abundance of
lignocellulosic materials and in the development of second generation biofuels
in order to arrive at an advantageous energy balance the recovery and use of
the lignin by-products is a must. Dingwell
showed in his presentation that a higher degree of hydrolysis leads to a higher
filter cake resistance.
Amidst the
numerous talks, Dr Ralf Beck
(Norwegian University of Science and Technology) discussed the effect of
crystallization conditions and particle size on the filtration process
following the crystallization stage.
Calcium carbonate and L-glutamic acid were discussed as examples, with
Beck concluding spherical particles with a narrow particle size distribution
being the most beneficial for downstream processing. Mikko Huhtanen has created Laptop-software, the goal of which
is to minimize the number of experiments in filter testing while producing a
sufficient amount of quality data on which to base statistical modelling.
Other
hot topics included the production of potable water by use of membranes, and in
the solid-liquid separation sessions the treatment of industrial side streams
received attention, and processing of biomaterials and their isolation from
waste streams was another focal point.
Finnish hospitality and the famous Skinnarila spirit
Despite the
long days and early mornings a friendly atmosphere was prominent among the
participants, and conversations flowed at both the Get Together party hosted by
Larox Corporation in Lappeenranta and at the
Conference Dinner held at Imatra Valtionhotelli. In Imatra, the guests were served a piece of
Finnish nature when the waters of Imatra rapids were released in the water show
specifically arranged for the symposium delegates.

Professor Richard Wakeman and Dr Trevor Sparks
exchange views on the future challenges of filtration technology.

Over 80 filtration experts gathered at LUT.

A
Short résumé of the 11th Nordic Filtration Symposium, 2008 in Copenhagen
In the heart of
Copenhagen and at the waterfront of the harbour The Danish Society of Engineers
hosted the 11th Nordic Filtration Conference August 25-26. Professor Gunnar
Jonsson, chairman of the organising committee, greeted the 80 participants
gathered for an interesting meeting. In
the scientific programme 27 papers were presented divided into three sessions –
“Filtration and separation”, “Membrane filtration” and “New developments in
membrane separation”. As pointed out by J Koskela there is still a substantial
interest in cake filtration especially in the mineral industry but increasing
in bio fuel and environmental areas. R&D in improved equipment design
(capacity and automation) and filter media (e.g. ceramic) is encouraged. Some
papers improved our knowledge of filtration of compressible organic solids. The
main theme was membrane filtration including both UF (e.g. operating
parameters, dynamic and high temperature) and nano. Particularly the wide range
of applications was noted – mineral, pulp&paper, bio fuel, birch sap and
dairy and not to forget a membrane filtered cold beer. More details regarding
the symposium please contact Prof G Jonsson (GJ@kt.dtu.dk).
The Nordic Filtration
Society AM decided to have their next 12th
Nordic Filtration Symposium in Gothenburg, Sweden in August 2009.
